What Are Laboratory Services?
Laboratory services focus on collecting specimens and analyzing them for the diagnosis, treatment, or monitoring of a condition or symptom. What Types of Diagnostic Testing Is Performed?
As a full-service hospital, we proudly provide inpatient, outpatient, and emergency laboratory services. Laboratory tests at USMD Hospital at Arlington must be ordered and authorized by your referring physician for you to be scheduled for a test. Our diagnostic laboratory houses a full-service transfusion blood bank. We also have a microbiology department that performs identification and sensitivity testing for antibiotic selection. Some of the most common lab tests we provide include:
- Lipid panels: Performed to measure cholesterol and triglyceride levels for cardiac care
- Complete blood count (CBC): Used as a measure of health and to screen for potential disorders or deficiencies
- Cultures: Conducted for illnesses caused by potential infections. Microorganisms are collected and tested to determine what foreign body is present in order to determine antibiotic treatment.
What Can I Expect from My Lab Tests?
Any preparation required for lab testing at our hospital will be discussed with you before the test. You may be asked to fast for a period of time, usually eight hours, before a test to ensure accurate results. Depending on the type of test, you may also be required to avoid consuming certain foods, vitamins, or other items that could impact your lab results.
Samples may be collected in a number of ways, such as through a blood draw, and are analyzed in our laboratory. Lab results are then sent to your referring physician typically within 24 – 48 hours. Results for testing that is more complex in nature may take longer to process. Your doctor can utilize these lab results to better understand your symptoms, potentially prevent the progression of disease, and help you make informed decisions about your treatment and overall health.
