Roger’s Journey to Health with Single-Port Robotic Surgery

At 63, Watauga, Texas resident Roger never imagined that a routine annual check-up would change his life. What started as a standard primary care visit quickly turned into a wake-up call and a journey that would not only save his life but also transform his health in more ways than one.

A Life-Changing Diagnosis

During his appointment, Roger learned that his PSA level, which is a key indicator for prostate cancer, was elevated at 8.7. At the same time, he was also diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Faced with these two serious health concerns, Roger knew it was time to act.

He immediately committed to a weight loss journey, ultimately shedding an incredible 88 pounds. His dedication not only improved his diabetes but also put him in a better position to undergo treatment for the next challenge he would face, prostate cancer.

Roger met with Dr. Adam Hollander, a board-certified urologist with Urology Partners of North Texas and a physician on the medical staff at USMD Hospital at Arlington, to discuss his options. With extensive experience in minimally invasive and robotic-assisted surgery, Dr. Hollander is known for his patient-centered care and surgical precision. He specializes in treating complex urologic conditions, including prostate cancer, using the latest advancements in robotic technology. As one of the leading surgeons in the region trained on the da Vinci Single-Port (SP) Robotic System, he is dedicated to helping patients achieve the best possible outcomes with less pain, faster recovery, and improved quality of life.

In December 2024, a biopsy confirmed the diagnosis. While he was presented with several treatment options, Roger and Dr. Adam Hollander determined that a robotic-assisted prostatectomy using the da Vinci Single-Port (SP) Robotic System would be the best course of action.

“Roger’s proactive approach and commitment to his health made a significant impact on his surgical outcome. He came into surgery stronger, healthier, and ready to heal.”

A Cutting-Edge Surgical Approach

Roger’s surgery took place at USMD Hospital at Arlington, one of the few hospitals in the region offering the latest single-port robotic technology. Unlike traditional surgeries that require multiple incisions, the single-port system allows the entire procedure to be done through one small incision, offering numerous benefits:

  • Minimally Invasive: Surgery through a single site leads to less trauma and faster healing.
  • No Abdominal Insufflation: Traditional robotic surgery involves inflating the abdomen with carbon dioxide, which can lead to abdominal bloating and pain postoperatively. Single port surgery allows the surgeon to stay outside of the abdominal cavity, avoiding these side effects.
  • Greater Precision: The da Vinci SP robot gives the surgeon enhanced control and visualization.
  • Reduced Postoperative Pain: Patients typically experience faster recoveries, minimal scarring, and in Roger’s case, very little incontinence, which is one of the most common concerns after prostate surgery.

“The single-port approach allows us to offer patients a more comfortable recovery with fewer complications. It’s a game-changer in prostate cancer surgery.”
— Dr. Adam Hollander

Returning to the Life He Loves

Just weeks after surgery, Roger was not only cancer-free but already returning to the things he loves most, including karaoke, where he’s known for belting out his favorite songs. His rapid recovery, minimal discomfort, and very small surgical scar allowed him to quickly regain his confidence and quality of life.

To commemorate his journey and transformation, Roger even got a tattoo of a phoenix (a symbol of rebirth and resilience) containing “22G” inside it, representing the size of a healthy prostate gland in grams. It serves as a powerful daily reminder of what he’s overcome and the new chapter he’s living.

“Roger’s story is a testament to what’s possible when we tailor care to the individual. Helping patients get back to the life they love is what it’s all about.”
— Dr. Adam Hollander

Advancing Care, Changing Lives

Thanks to the combination of Roger’s determination, expert surgical care, and innovative technology, his outcome was everything he hoped for: cancer-free, minimal side effects, and back to living life on his terms.
